At the Dog Park
by brian @ 15:29:36 - [perma-link]

I finally got flash to the park up the street (finally found it is more accurate). There was only one other dog here, but they weren't interested in playing after a meet & greet. We threw the frisbee instead.

And its time to get some new discs. Flash modified this one to be harder to throw and catch. I guess he needs more of a challenge.

Earthrace
by brian @ 11:10:10 - [perma-link]

Claudia and I went for a ride on the boat yesterday with Flash and
her new puppy, Bear 2.0 (she came up here to get him). The dogs were
really good on the boat. Flash is looking much more tolerant of the
ridiculous engine noise.

Anyhow... When we cruised up toward downtown Portland, we saw this
weird looking boat at one of
the docks. Earthrace is a boat from New Zealand that is planning to
make a record-breaking 65-day trip around the world sometime this
fall (according to their website).

According to specs, the boat's twin 540hp engines can push the 78-
foot long craft to a max speed of 45 knots. My boat is faster
(woohoo! pbbbbbt!), but not in the kind of chop and swells they'll
bust right through on the oceans. I should find out when they're
leaving and go chase them up to the Columbia :).

Skatepark in Reedsport
by brian @ 17:01:28 - [perma-link]

Flash and I turned off of 101 in Reedsport where we saw this skatepark. There were a lot of skaters, but most of them were just kind of standing around. Flash played with a big dog for a bit, then we continued on our way home.

Better Brian has a Better Lens
by brian @ 17:56:19 - [perma-link]

On our tour of the Bay Area, we visited Brian and Erin. Brian has
a very cool digital SLR with a 10.5mm (I think it was... "the widest
view Nikon has") fisheye lens. I took some shots of Flash. He was
just over 12 weeks in these pictures. He's grown a lot. Even since
these pictures, not even a week ago, he's grown. 40lbs is probably a
little low.

Brian also took this spectacular picture of the Vanagon.

I gave Flash a bath today. Now he's minty fresh.

Good boy, Flash!

First Vanagon Trip
by brian @ 20:38:59 - [perma-link]

Josh, Nikki, the kids and I took the dogs to the coast today. It was a good hour and 45 minutes on the road. Cruise control (oh yeah... I found an Audiovox cruise control kit at Schuck's this week and installed it the other night) rocked. The road noise was way less than in the Defender. It does nicely.

The dogs were fun on the beach. Dixon went crazy in the water. Flash was a little scared at first buthe was running around in the water after a bit. Brodie was somewhere in between.

Vanagon: Lots of minor fixes today
by brian @ 00:37:16 - [perma-link]

I drove the Vanagon home yesterday and parked it in the garage.
Today I fixed a few more things. I adjusted the shift linkage, so R,
1, 2 and 3 are pretty decent. 4th slips out if you don't hold the
stick back, and the gears kind of stick under load. And 3rd is easy
to find, but doesn't quite feel right. At the very least it needs
new gear oil, but we'll probably have to open it up soon and fix
something inside.

I aired up the tires to 35, but then Josh found the plate inside the
door and they should be at 38 and 45 (i think... easy enough to check
before I fill them tomorrow). Connie and I checked the speedometer
against a GPS. It reads about 25% fast, which most likely means that
the transmission isn't the one that came on the car.

I wanted to check the brake fluid earlier today, but couldn't find
it. We looked through Josh's owners manual and discovered that the
brake fluid reservoir is inside the dashboard. I poured a fair
amount of brake fluid in and drove it around. The brakes are
stronger now, but still need to be checked out. The brake light
works now, too (it was stuck on before i refilled the fluid ;).

The side door wasn't opening smoothly, or quietly, so I sprayed it
with some silicon lube. I also found a very loose screw that was
hanging on something when the door first cracks open. Now I can open
it with one hand, instead of having to pop it, then pull the back of
the door out, then slide it.

And of course, it now has a dog crate on the back seat. I had been
driving with Flash's crate on the floor, but now he'll be able to
look out the windows.

This thing is so much fun. I'll take some more pictures tomorrow.

Flash!
by brian @ 16:16:00 - [perma-link]

I picked up my new puppy, yesterday. His name is Flash, and he's a
mix of Cattle Dog and Border Collie, which means he'll probably be
herding the cats in a few weeks.

So far he's been really mellow, and sleeps most of the time. He'll
be 7 weeks tomorrow, but the people at Out West Pet Rescue in
Prosser, WA (3 hour drive each way to go get him!) said he's been
eating hard food for almost 2 weeks.

Daisy seems to get along with him pretty well. Buster seems a little
confused about there being another dog here. They're both staying
with me this weekend, so there will be plenty of time for them to
become friends.
